Best Indies - Movie 8 - American Graffiti

What is it about - Teenager's one day of life which is full of subtle dramatic moments. That's the last day for some, one pair is all set for a breakup, others want to have a little action.
We see many stories in a random sequence. Few characters cross across the stories. This is a very personal, diary-worthy kind of storyline. Only one substory that got my full attention was that of the underage girl trying to date an adult. Those two characters, their journey, and the conclusion were very beautiful. And that is the only story worth writing about. The underage girl is an accidental villain to the lead character. She's the obstacle for his potential date. And that small innocent girl being an obstacle in the story is a very fresh idea. The performance of both the girl and the boy were good. Music is commendable, especially when they bond for the first time and the other girls sled them.
The rest of the movie is average. Finding a new date, breakups, car race, and seeing an illusion of goddess-like-woman on the road. They all have a few good moments but nothing was great. I couldn't figure out a link between this and the star wars. This doesn't have a story structure and it deals with many protagonists. Also, this doesn't have definite character arcs. I am not sure how it made that kind of money.
If you ask me why should I watch this film, I don't have an answer.

Best Indies - Movie 1 - Slacker

What is it about - This film is about slackers. People who don't do anything and always have reasons for it. Different people have different reasons but one thing is common - They don't like to work hard. Engagement Level - I was about to quit this movie at about 30 minutes and a shy boy-girl conversation hooked me up. It was realistic and interesting. And it gave me fuel to watch some more. Then I started enjoying this new pattern and it didn't irritate me to watch. I had to quit about 72nd minute because the film is showing the same things over and over and finally it bored me. Craft - This movie doesn't have a cinematic quality. Anybody who knows to write dialogues and direct actors can do this. There is no story, so there's no need for a structure. There's nothing exciting in its Cinematography, Editing, and Sound. Though the characters have a great sense of humor, they don't deserve our empathy. Observations - There are funny dialogues...

Best Indies - Movie 7 - Lost in translation

W hat is it about - It's about how two Americans became close friends in Japan. The logline doesn't look like a film story. This film could not have been more subtle. There are very beautiful moments in this film. I love the irony that always comes at the right time on Bill Murray's face. I love Scarlett Johannson's looks and performance. So it's easy to watch this film even if it has no story. There is no much drama here. It's too realistic and forgettable. This film minus performance of those two is close to nothing. The film well shot. The humor is good, but there's only one kind of humor in this whole film. i.e how Bill reacts to the foreign language. The film shows a gradual improvement in their friendship which is good to see. The lead characters are very good guys in this film. We can connect to them because we all get lost once in a while. There is a feminine perspective in this film. I could have guessed that a female wrote this even ...
