What is it about - It's about how two Americans became close friends in Japan. The logline doesn't look like a film story. This film could not have been more subtle.
There are very beautiful moments in this film. I love the irony that always comes at the right time on Bill Murray's face. I love Scarlett Johannson's looks and performance. So it's easy to watch this film even if it has no story. There is no much drama here. It's too realistic and forgettable. This film minus performance of those two is close to nothing.
The film well shot. The humor is good, but there's only one kind of humor in this whole film. i.e how Bill reacts to the foreign language. The film shows a gradual improvement in their friendship which is good to see.
The lead characters are very good guys in this film. We can connect to them because we all get lost once in a while. There is a feminine perspective in this film. I could have guessed that a female wrote this even if I didn't know about it. They have insisted on companionship more than sex. And the little things are shown in macro lenses (not literally). For example - running around the city like children, singing to karaoke at a party, talking about the past in bed. It's a rare story of a teenage girl who meets a cool uncle with whom she can chill without worrying about sex.
I liked how this film ends. Bill says something Scarlet before leaving Japan. I couldn't hear it. I switched on the subtitles, it shows "inaudible". The conclusion is kept secret from us. It can be as simple as 'I'll meet you someday' or the other extreme 'Come soon to our country, Let's get married'. Leaving it open is a bold decision and it's fun.
I didn't have any favorites in actors before. Now I can say these two are my favorite actors. That doesn't mean I should watch all their shitty films and waste my time. I am not a fanboy yet.
